How to swap your driving test with another learner
You can swap your car driving test with another learner who already has one booked. Since 1 October 2026 it takes two phone calls to DVSA, one from each of you, on the same day.
Checked against DVSA's official guidance on GOV.UK on 15 October 2026. SwapTest isn't part of DVSA, and DVSA makes the final decision on every swap.
What changed on 1 October 2026
DVSA changed how swaps work. Both of you now call DVSA yourselves, separately, on the same day. If only one of you calls, the request quietly expires at the end of the day. Many guides online still describe the old way.
Can you swap? Check this first
A swap can only go ahead if all of these are true for both of you:
- You both want each other's exact date, time and test centre.
- You each have at least one of your 2 allowed changes left. A swap uses one.
- It's at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two tests (Monday to Saturday count).
- Each test is at the same centre, one of the 3 nearest centres to your current one, or the centre you first booked at. See which centres can swap with each other.
- You have the same type of booking: weekday with weekday, or evening, weekend or bank holiday with the same.
- Your driving instructors are happy that you'll be ready for the new date, and can take you.
What to have ready before you call
- Your driving licence number and your own booking reference number
- The other learner's booking reference number
- The payment card you booked your test with (not needed if your instructor booked it before 12 May 2026)
- The date, time and test centre of both tests
- Details of any driving tests you've taken before
How the two calls work
- Agree the day and who calls first. Pick a weekday you're both free, and decide who will be learner 1.
- Learner 1 calls DVSA on 0300 200 1122, option 2. They pass security checks, agree a legal declaration, and give the details of both tests, including the other learner's booking reference. DVSA records the request.
- Learner 2 calls the same day, ideally by 4pm, to confirm. They pass their own security checks, agree the declaration and give the details of both tests. DVSA then completes the swap.
- You both get an email from DVSA with your new test details. You keep your own booking reference and any special requirements.
DVSA's lines are open Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. If learner 2 calls late in the afternoon there may not be time to finish, and if they don't call at all the request expires at the end of the day. DVSA won't tell learner 1, so it's worth checking in with each other.
Don't change either test after learner 1 has called. Any change to the date, time or centre cancels the request, and you'd have to start again.
What never to share with the other learner
Your booking reference is all the other learner needs. DVSA's guidance is not to give another learner your driving licence number, theory test certificate number, address, phone number, email address or card details. DVSA will never ask you for your card's full number or security code.
You do still need some way to agree the day and who calls first. On SwapTest, contact details are only shared if you both agree to the swap, and you each choose what to share, so you can keep it to the minimum you're comfortable with.
Finding someone to swap with
The hard part is usually finding a learner who wants your exact slot, at a centre you're both allowed to use. That's what SwapTest does. You list the test you already hold, and we look for a learner who wants it. We never search or touch the DVSA booking service, never hold or sell appointments, and no money changes hands between learners. You make the swap with DVSA yourself.
Be careful of anyone who offers to swap, book or move a test for you for a fee. Read our guide to spotting driving test booking scams.
Common questions
Can I swap my driving test with someone else?
Yes. You can swap your car driving test with another learner who already has a test booked, as long as you both want each other's exact date, time and centre and you both meet DVSA's rules. You arrange it with DVSA by phone. Nobody else can do it for you, including your driving instructor.
Do both learners have to call DVSA?
Yes. Since 1 October 2026, both learners must call DVSA separately on the same day. One of you calls first to request the swap, and the other calls later that day to confirm it. DVSA recommends the second call is made by 4pm.
What happens if the second learner doesn't call?
The swap request expires at the end of the day. DVSA won't tell the first learner, so you need to agree between you when you'll each call. If it expires, you start again with a new first call.
Does a swap count as one of my two changes?
Yes. Swapping your appointment with another learner counts as one of your 2 allowed changes. You can't swap if either of you has already used both.
How much notice do I need to swap?
The swap has to be requested at least 10 full working days before the earlier of the two tests. Monday to Saturday count as working days. Sundays and public holidays don't.
Which test centres can I swap with?
Each test must be at the same centre, one of the 3 nearest centres to your current one, or the centre you first booked at. The rule has to work for both of you. Our driving test centres page lists which centres can swap in both directions.
Is it legal to pay someone to swap my test?
It's against DVSA's terms and conditions for a third party to change, swap or cancel a test for someone else, and since 12 May 2026 it's against the law for anyone but the learner to book a test. You should only ever pay DVSA's official fee for the test itself.
Looking for someone to swap with?
List the test you already have and we'll look for a learner at your centre, or one nearby, who wants your date. It's free if you want a later date. You keep your own booking, and you make the swap with DVSA yourself.
